basis wien : altbau renovierung

museumsquartier, vienna

construction begin : 1996  :   completion : 1997

Designing within a building protected as a heritage landmark in the old part of the city in central Vienna required us to break some old habits developed in past renovations where the boun-daries between new and old some-times blur.

Basis Wien, an archive department for art and architecture, had just leased this small space when they hired us. As usual, this was a rush job in which we did design, sourcing, project man-agement and construction.

Work was limited to archival storage. A long aluminium credit-card shaped floating wall spans the entire north wall and extends out into the baroque courtyard.  When closed it resembles a solid wall, but narrow reveals invite one to pull, slide and push the surface, transforming the smooth surface into a landscape of drawers and awnings.

In addition to this, mobile storage was designed with translucent blue skin and allowed to roam freely throughout the relatively untouched interior.
